What If? The launch of a thousand ‘what ifs’!

It's time to tell you about that sentence I read that blew my mind and launched a thousand’What ifs’! It is not even a long sentence, but it turned my world upside down, Not only because it revealed a truth to me, but because it opened my eyes to a mythology I had created about myself! It made me wonder what other mythologies I have been operating under as if they were truth. All of a sudden my world took on new dimensions!

Back in December I was reading a fantastic book, "Breath" by journalist James Nestor, which I highly recommend. Not only is it home to this sentence, it's just an enjoyable book all around. Leading up to the sentence, he is talking about carbon dioxide and it is role in our body and how the oxygen-carbon dioxide exchange works. I'm going to go ahead and give you the whole paragraph:

"For every ten pounds of fat loss in our bodies, eight and a half pounds of it comes out through the lungs; most of it is carbon dioxide mixed with a bit of water vapor. The rest is sweated or urinated out. This is a fact that most doctors, nutritionists, and other medical professionals have historically gotten wrong. The lungs are the weight regulating system of the body."

What??? Holy cow! And he didn't even mention #2!

So this, understandably, got my gears turning and I wondered if my idea of how this all worked was so far off from reality, what if everything I thought I knew about my body was wrong? And where did my belief come from? I guess I really didn't learn it in school…and then I realized it was my own personal mythology. We tend to think of mythology as stories-- often silly sounding in retrospect-- that the ancient people made up to describe the world around them. We think of mythology as a thing of the past. But here I realized that it is not a thing of the past! Our brains are designed to do this-- to fill in the blanks-- to make sense of what we experience. And when we form these mythologies they shape the lens through which we see the world; they mold our perceptions.

I share this to not only illuminate how I started really asking the question "What if," but also because my "What if"this month-- my resurrecting idea-- was a revisit to the original. When I read this back in December I did delve a bit deeper and had even had this thought that I really hadn't had time to explore thoroughly because my journey took a detour: What if my body is fully capable of functioning perfectly, at full capacity, but my beliefs are keeping it from doing so?

Like take my thyroid for instance, what if it is 100% capable but the story I've been believing is that it is impaired and that belief is what drives the function. My thyroid says, "Well I can operate at 100%, but you are asking me to do 60%, well ok…you're the boss." I now believe that this is a complete possibility after looking at it from several different angles, especially with what I have learned about our subconscious mind and the way it operates. And it is the one carrying out the orders.

Now, the new "what if" is circling back, sort of echoing these original questions. What if we choose how it all works? The original context was in our bodies, but as it has unfolded I see how it is a relavant question for ALL! But isn't that just the same message we have been hearing for years-we create our experience and we choose by what we give our attention to? I guess I have just never thought about it on quite this tangible a level before. Things like our body and how it functions just seem so solid—so set in stone. But now that I know that all of this solid seeming extra fluff on my body is just a bunch of air...

Maybe my creative…and your creative power and potential is really much more than we knew! Maybe this is the ultimate explaination for why different health protocols work so well for some and not at all for others. Yes, I think it is!

And then I was listening to Dr. Rangan Chatterjee's book "Make Changes That Last," and he said that in his first week in medical school they were told that 50% of what they would be taught is incorrect-- they just dont know which 50%! So keep that in mind the next time you get a diagnosis that doesnt sit right with your gut. And I am really not saying anything bad about medical professionals, I believe most of them are well intended and are doing their best with what they were taught. And they do help a lot of people and save lives.

So, this has been a really big unfolding for me this month and I don't think I can possibly get it all into this one post. Coming from a metaphysical background, the power of mind is not a new concept for me by any means. I grew up hearing stories like one of an Oxford experiment that students conducted on inmates in which the inmates were blindfolded and then made to believe their wrists were cut. The warm trickle of water was convincing enough that some of the inmates actually died.

How many stories have we bought into or made up to explain the state of our health or wellness over the years? Many, so long ago even, that we just take them for granted as if we learned them from some authority when we were really the author, maybe even when we were children and really had no idea what was going on?

Now I am listening to "The Wisdom of Your Cells" by Dr. Bruce Lipton (one of my favs) and oh boy! I am going to have much to tell you about my experience with this book later, but I am going to leave you with this for now. Bruce Lipton is a cellular biologist and pioneer of the science of epigenetics--he has also played an important role in my life as he brought me to PSYCH-K®!" In the book, he goes through all of the science of how our biology functions, including our genes and DNA.

While it is a commonly held belief that our health is ultimately determined by whatever genes we inherited, the science now proves this is not the case and that the expression or suppression of our genes is determined by our perceptions and beliefs!

Once again science is proving spirituality! And I think this is creating pathways to enhance our metaphysical healing! As, while it is not necessary to know how it all works for healing to occur, sometimes the way it works provides a helpful clue to the nature of the error being corrected.

Now it’s your turn…What mythologies are at play in your life? What might you change if you change your beliefs? I can tell you, while it may not be completely due to this change in my perception, I have exhaled at least 20 lbs of fat since I had this shift!
